 Lecture 1 :

Overview of Knowledge Management (KM)

By the end of the day I was supposed to:-

¢  Describe the differences between the terms data, information and knowledge
¢  Assess the differences in the management of knowledge from ancient to modern times
¢  Explain the diversity of disciplines and content that constitute the field of knowledge management
¢  Distinguish between different perspectives in the knowledge management literature

Not sure is the goal set above is achieved or not but, sure had fun during the activities in class
  •          Drawing flowers
  •          Solving riddles (the answer was refrigerator but when reading the first two lines of the clue we weirdly thought the answer was a coffin)
  •          Creating a map (never knew that drawing up a map could be that hard)

My understanding of the lecture (the summarized version ):-

  1.     Data is raw facts
  2.     Information is organized data
  3.     Knowledge is directed information which is also considered as an organizational asset.
  4.     Knowledge is separated into :-
    •       tacit
      •       (which is later separated into technical and cognitive ). It is based on experience and cant be expressed through formulas and calculations

    •       explicit
      •      Manual
      •      Problem-solving Methods
      •      Database
      •      Theoretical approach
